A soft starter is primarily used to limit motor starting current and reduce mechanical stress by gradually ramping the motor up to full operating speed. Once running, the motor typically operates at a fixed speed.

A Variable Speed Drive (VSD), on the other hand, continuously controls the frequency and voltage supplied to the motor, allowing its speed and torque to be adjusted throughout operation. This makes VSDs ideal for applications such as pumps, fans, conveyors, and machinery where variable speed or controlled acceleration and deceleration are required.

Thermal overloads trip when a motor draws excessive current for long enough to create potentially damaging heat. Common causes include mechanical overloading or binding, phase loss or voltage imbalance, low supply voltage, incorrect overload settings, frequent starting, restricted motor cooling, or deterioration within the motor itself.
